Information for Students Attending Biology 11A - Spring Semester 2017
Dear Catalina Student,
Welcome to Natural History 11A: Island Ecology Kelp Forests of Catalina, I'm sure you will learn much about our kelp bed ecosystem while enjoying an adventure on the sea. I know everyone has questions about the course so I will attempt to answer some of them in this letter.
We will meet on SATURDAY, May 13, 2017. PLEASE BE ON TIME. for the lecture and session in CFS 91008. I will introduce you to the animals, plants and ecology of the kelp forests with lecture, slides and specimens. The session will begin at 10:00 am sharp and end at 2:30 pm. There is a $10.00 charge for the Course Guide, which will be distributed at the first, on-campus, meeting. Please bring CASH PAYMENT to the meeting. If you need to rent fins and mask/snorkel the equipment will be available at the meeting - the cost is $10. One week later on SUNDAY, May 21, 2017, we will depart at 7:30 am from 22nd Street Landing, San Pedro the Isthmus, or Two Harbors, area of Catalina Island and return by 6:00 pm. So if you need to rent mask, fins and snorkel - the cost along with the course guide is $20. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included at NO ADITIONAL CHARGE AND THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THE BOAT..
I have chartered a sixty-five foot diving vessel to transport us to Catalina and to serve as our floating classroom. Once at the island there will be a demonstration of skin diving technique, a discussion of safety, and preparation for field study. There will be two in water sessions for each student, morning and afternoon, which will include a guided familiarization dive and a field quiz. We will return to San Pedro at approximately 7:00 pm.
As I am sure you have anticipated, some equipment will be necessary. All of the necessary equipment can be rented. If you wish to purchase a mask, and\/or fins please do not do so until after talking with me. Again I recommend renting if you are not sure about use after the course. I will discuss equipment thoroughly at the campus meeting. A warm wet suit is a must the water temperature this time of year will be warm, but not warm enough to stay in without a wetsuit. A surfing-type wetsuit is NOT adequate, you will need a full diving suit with a hood. Wet suit rental is not expensive - about $15. I will provide information on where to rent wetsuits, etc. at the meeting. If you need to rent fins and mask/snorkel the equipment will be available at the meeting - the cost is $10. There is no charge for the boat.
If you have any questions please feel to email me email at email@example.com (best) or call me 310/999-9072. I will have more information, maps, what to bring, etc. at the campus meeting. See you there. www.pcmsusa.org
